WHAT IS DIABETES?
I f you have diabetes, your body is unable to use the energy
from the food you eat. A hormone called insulin may not
be made by the body or may not be able to be used by the
body in the normal way. This results in a high blood sugar.
Food is broken down into sugar (glucose) and used as fuel
(like a car uses gas for fuel) by the body. The glucose
(sugar) enters the blood stream to be used by body cells
for energy. Insulin is needed for the cells to use this
glucose (sugar).
How Insulin Works
insulin makes it possible for the glucose (sugar) to enter
the cell. Think of the cell as a room with a locked door.
In order for glucose (sugar) to enter the room (cell) you
need a key. Insulin is the hey that opens the door and allows
the glucose to enter.
When you have diabetes, the insulin cannot move from
the blood stream into the cell. Sugar (glucose) builds up
in the blood stream. This is called hyperglycemia or high
blood sugar. |
