Low Blood Sugar
Hypoglycemia
Insulin and diabetes pills work to control your blood sugar.
If you skip or delay a meal while you are taking insulin
and/or diabetes pills, your blood sugar may become
too low You may get a reaction called hypoglycemia
(low blood sugar).
You may feel these signs
of hypoglycemia:
' Sweating
' Shaky hands
Dizziness
Rapid heart beat
Mood swings
Headache
. Hunger
. Tingling around lips or tongue
. FaintTreating
Low Blood Sugar
/ treat Signs of low blood sugar quickly!
/ tf you are having signs of low blood sugar, first check your blood
sugar to
see if it is low. If you feel faint or very weak, treat yourself first
with a quick
acting sugar then check your blood sugar.
/ check your blood sugar again in about 15 to 30 minutes to make sure it
is up to normal. If it is still low; take another quick acting sugar.

your doctor.
/ After you treat your reaction, have a snack or eat your next meal.
This helps
to avoid another low blood sugar.
/ You can prevent a low blood sugar reaction. Do not skip or delay your
meals
and snacks. If you have been very active or have exercisedm ore than
usual
check your blood sugar. Eat a snack.
/ tf you have a hlpoglycemic reaction, you will need to check your blood
sugar
a few extra times that day.
/ Your family, caregiver or friend should call 911 for help if your
reaction gets
worse and you are having seizures or pass out.
/ you should always wear and carry medical identification that tells
others you
have diabetes.

Honey - I Tablespoon
. Hard Candies (Lifesavers*) - 7
. Sugar - 4 Teaspoons (can mix in water)
Glucose Tablets - 3 Tablets

Treating Hypoglycemia
with Glucagon
. lf you have low blood sugar reactions often with few warning signs,
your doctor may want to prescribe Glucagon.
. Glucagon is a medicine that will raise your blood sugar if you have
a hypoglycemic reaction. It is only used if you pass out from a low
blood
sugar reaction and are unable to eat or drink.
. Glucagon is given by injection. A family member or friend would need
to learn how to give you the Glucagon.
. It is important to tell your family or friends never to give you food
or
drink if you pass out.
